Chapter Eight

Eve

Eve just stared as Doran turned to face her. He had barely even broken a sweat and didn’t seem the slightest bit out of breath. His calm, smooth expression was not one of panic or stress. Instead, he seemed like he had this totally under control.

When they had rounded a corner only to encounter six guards, Eve had assumed that they were done for. She wasn’t even angry when he had talked about giving up. After all, it was better than being dead, right? Being shot at wasn’t exactly something Eve had been all too excited about, and she had been willing to go quietly if it meant their lives.

And yet, Doran had managed to turn it all around at the very last second and come out on top. Not only had he managed to knock out all six of the guards, but he had done so quickly and with minimal violence. He hadn’t used the gun to fire at them, and he didn’t seem interested in killing them, even though they had threatened him with death by raising the blasters in his direction.

“Are you okay?” he said.

“Yes, yes, I’m fine,” Eve responded, finding her voice after a moment.

“Then we need to keep going. You heard Kalin. More will be coming,” he said, grabbing her hand again.

Eve didn’t need to be told twice. She followed him quickly as they ran down the halls. The silence was deafening, but the thundering footsteps behind them were even worse.

The alien creatures were coming. If they didn’t hurry, they’d be caught again, and Eve didn’t think that they should risk another fight. Doran was anything but human, that much was amply clear, but he still seemed to be one of the good guys.

Even if the way he moved unnerved her a bit. No human had that; that easy of movement, that speed and agility. No human looked like they knew exactly what was going to happen, the minute before it happened.

It had all happened so fast that Eve could barely keep up when she tried to replay it in her mind. But Doran had known exactly when to duck, and where to hit, and it had been like watching poetry, in a sick sort of way.

But if they fought again, what was stopping the creatures from using their guns first, and asking questions later?

Doran had gotten close by fooling them, but she didn’t think that they would be fooled again. They didn’t seem to be stupid, not at all.

Now that she could understand their terrible chattering noises as words, she could hear and feel the cruelty all the more. They were not bestial in the slightest. They knew exactly what they were doing, and she could have sworn that she heard triumph and pleasure in the voice over the speakers.

Who had Doran said it was? Kalin. The captain of the ship.

Eve shuddered. They were in real trouble if they got caught again. Eve could feel it in her bones, and she didn’t like the uncomfortable feeling that twisted in her chest.
